If you’re a parent and you’ve ever thought taking family photos is stressful, I want to let you in on a little secret: a family photoshoot at home might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Perhaps the idea of doing photos anywhere but a pretty location outside just hasn’t occurred to you before. So many families here in Munich opt for in-home newborn sessions but never consider it’s just as magical for a family session.
Maybe you’re worried your home isn’t beautiful enough, or you’re dreading the idea of a deep clean beforehand. But the truth is, neither of those things matters very much. Being at home gives parents and kids alike a chance to relax and just be themselves in a way that’s really hard to replicate in a public space.

And that’s the whole point. Feeling comfortable and willing to relax is one of the most important ingredients in a family photoshoot. It’s how we make the best photos. That’s why one of the main tenets of my work is connection over perfection.
So now that you’re convinced, let’s talk through some practical tips on how to have a really fun photoshoot at home with you and your family.

What’s true in life and certainly with family photos, is expectations are the source of stress and the death of joy.
If you want to enjoy family photos at home, you can clean or dress up if you want to, but be sure to let go of all expectations of how you think photos is supposed to go in order to have a good time. Let go of all expectations for your partner and your kids. This is the time to let everyone be themselves, whatever that looks like. And trust your photographer to be the one to guide you along the way if people are having a hard time.
Most of all, let yourself enjoy the surprise of whatever ends up happening.

If you’ve every had a family photoshoot before, chances are that everything has gone wrong along the way. Call it Murphy’s Law. Call it life with kids. Maybe your toddler melting down for 45 minutes when the photographer arrives, your partner didn’t help clean the house like you wanted, someone stained their outfit just before the doorbell rang…
The best thing you can do, is just laugh it off. Embrace the chaos and just laugh.
Trust me, as a mom of two littles myself, I know this isn’t easy advice. But I promise you that if you can choose to laugh it off instead of holding on tight to the facade of control and perfection, your photographer will absolutely be able to make something incredible out of it.

Bear with me on this one… In the days leading up to your photoshoot, take a few minutes to make a list of all the things you love about your home.
The afternoon light that comes through the kitchen window. The tiny handprints smudged on the back door. A piece of furniture that has a story. A corner of the living room that just feels like you.
Write it down in your phone or a notebook. There is something to be said about romanticizing your life. When you stop to notice the here and the now and to focus on the positive, you’ll be so much better off. Then share it with your photographer before the session. It gives me a chance to step into your world and see it through your eyes, and that makes all the difference to creating a session together.

One of the simplest things you can do before an in-home family photoshoot is to just be together and feel connected. Feeling more in touch with each other will make photos at home feel that much more special (and easy).
Need some ideas?
You don’t need to do anything over the top. Even putting your phone in another room for an hour and just being present together is enough. It’s a small thing that makes a real difference.
The reason this matters is that a photoshoot captures how you feel around each other, not just how you look. When you’ve had a few easy, connected moments together in the days before, that warmth shows up in the photos. You’re already in the right headspace. The camera just catches what’s already there.

Maybe this is the best part, but if you’re hacing phtoos at home, it only makes sense to keep it casual. Dressing up in formal wear at home won’t feel or look natural, so just let yourself enjoy a morning or afternoon of no pressure for once and just enjoy being comfortable, and together.
If this sounds like something your family would love, I would be so happy to chat. I offer in-home family photography across Munich and the surrounding area, and I promise the experience will be a lot more relaxed than you might expect.
Is my home nice enough for a photoshoot? Yes. Genuinely. I have never walked into a home and thought it wasn’t right for photos. What matters is the light, the feeling, and the people in it. Not the decor.
What rooms work best for in-home family photos? Living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens tend to work beautifully. Anywhere with good natural light and enough space to move around. I’ll always do a quick walk-through when I arrive to find the best spots.
Do I need to deep clean before the session? A light tidy is helpful, but a deep clean is not necessary. A lived-in home looks real and warm. That’s exactly what we’re going for.
What should we wear for an in-home family photoshoot? Comfortable, casual clothes in soft, complementary tones. Think what you’d wear on a relaxed weekend at home. Avoid busy patterns or large logos.
How long does an in-home family session take? Most sessions run between 60 and 90 minutes, which is plenty of time to warm up, play, and capture some really beautiful moments.

Meg is truly a gift behind the camera. She captured both my maternity and newborn photos. She captures the love and little in-between moments so effortlessly. Looking through the photos, I see not just what we looked like in those special days, but exactly how we felt. If you’re looking for someone who is not only incredibly talented but also deeply kind and grounded, Meg is the one.
