Expecting a baby is one of the most exciting and overwhelming experiences of your life. Yet, if you’re an english-speaker or international family living in Munich, expecting a baby in Germany, in a language that isn’t fully yours yet, in a country whose healthcare system you’re still figuring out, often can feel daunting.

I know this firsthand. My second child was born at the Geisenhofer Klinik. And even though I speak German fluently, there was something about navigating birth preparation in a new country, in a new system, that made me hesitate. I wanted to feel informed and at ease, and I wanted that in the language I think and feel most clearly in.

The good news is Munich has a genuinely wonderful network of English-speaking support for expecting parents, and finding your birth prep class is one of the best first steps you can take. Not just because of what you’ll learn, but because of who you’ll meet. Preparing for birth with a small group of other English-speaking parents at a similar stage is one of the most natural ways to start building the community that will carry you through the first year of parenthood. Attending an English-language birth prep course in Munich means you’re sitting across from other people in exactly the same situation: international, expecting, excited, and quietly wondering if they’re doing everything right. That community, the one that starts in a prenatal class and often carries well into the first year of parenthood, is something you can’t put a price on when you’re far from home.

Here are the four options that come up most consistently in Munich’s expat parent groups on Facebook and WhatsApp.

A Note Before You Start

In Germany, birth preparation classes (Geburtsvorbereitung) led by a registered midwife (Hebamme) are fully covered by your statutory public health insurance for the mother. Partner fees are typically paid privately, though it’s always worth checking with your insurer whether they will contribute.

Classes led by doulas are not covered by public insurance, as doulas are not registered medical practitioners. The classes below are noted accordingly.

1. Pippagina

Location: Lerchenfeldstrasse 16, Lehel, 80538 Munich
Language: English
Insurance: Yes, covered by public health insurance

If you’ve spent any time in Munich’s English-speaking parent community, you’ve probably heard of Pippagina.

Pippagina was founded by Lynn Darbyshire, a British registered midwife and German registered Hebamme with a Master’s degree in Women’s Health and Midwifery. Lynn has been a midwife for over 30 years, has worked in the UK, the USA, and Germany. Sofia, also a registered midwife, has joined Lynn’s team and teaches Italian-language classes for the Italian-speaking community in Munich.

What makes Pippagina so much more than a one-time birth prep course is the range of what they offer across pregnancy, the newborn period, and the early years:

Before birth: One Stop Childbirth Preparation for Couples, a Second Time Around refresher for mothers expecting their second baby, an Early Birds workshop for the first and second trimester, and Breastfeeding and Newborn Care Preparation.

After birth: New Beginnings classes for babies from 2 to 12 weeks, Tiny Tots from 3 to 6 months, Little Movers from 6 to 9 months, Explorers from 9 to 12 months, and Little Adventurers for babies from 12 to 18 months.

Additional classes through guest teachers: Music Classes,Pregnancy Yoga, Postnatal Yoga, Sing and Sign, Daddy and Baby Massage, First Aid, and more.

What I hear most often from families who’ve been through Pippagina is how they met some of their best mom friends. I’m personally part of the Pippagina community. I’ve photographed families who found each other through these classes, and I’ve photographed Lynn and her team themselves. It’s a warm, genuine, and very welcoming space for international families in Munich.

What Julia also provides full doula birth support for families. One family I photographed used Julia as their birth doula for their second child. Having someone to talk each question and experience through, makes a world of difference as a new parents.

Maddy

Meg is truly a gift behind the camera. She captured both my maternity and newborn photos. She captures the love and little in-between moments so effortlessly. Looking through the photos, I see not just what we looked like in those special days, but exactly how we felt. If you’re looking for someone who is not only incredibly talented but also deeply kind and grounded, Meg is the one.
