What To Expect At a Newborn Session with Hoechsmann Photography

As a Munich Newborn Photographer, there’s nothing more exciting than receiving the message that a baby has been born. Whether you’re a first-time parent or welcoming another little one, those first days fly by faster than you can imagine. Capturing them is priceless—you’ll have something tangible to hold onto long after these early moments have passed.

If you’ve already booked your session—or you’re still deciding—you may be wondering: What actually happens during a newborn photoshoot? Here’s exactly what to expect at your newborn session and how I make the experience calm, easy, and enjoyable for your family.

In-Home Photography: Why It’s the Best Choice

All of my newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your home in Munich or the surrounding areas. My sessions are built around comfort and natural moments, so it only makes sense to have these at home. Here are just a few reasons why:

Easiest for mom: No packing bags, no stressful travel, no rushing to appointments. You have everything you need right there.

Perfect for siblings: Older siblings do best in their own environment. They can participate when they want and take breaks when they need to.

Authentic to your story: The most meaningful photos come from real moments in the spaces where your memories are being made.

When Do Newborn Sessions Take Place?

Sessions are scheduled for mid-morning (10 AM)—a time that usually offers flattering natural light and a calmer atmosphere for babies. While every baby has their own rhythm, this window tends to avoid the late-day fussiness that many parents know as “witching hour.”

We set the exact date after your baby arrives, giving you time to rest and settle in before the session.

How to Prepare: Timing, Flow, and Flexibility

Newborn sessions last approximately 1–2 hours. But don’t worry—this isn’t non-stop posing. These sessions are intentionally slow, allowing time for:

  • Feeding breaks
  • Diaper changes
  • Outfit changes (yes, spit-up happens!)
  • Comforting and cuddling

Even if your baby seems to have a solid routine, be prepared for them to feed more often during the session. This is completely normal—they’re adjusting to new surroundings, and we follow their lead.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Session

Step 1: Settling In

Before the camera comes out, we take a few minutes to connect. We’ll chat, check in on how everyone is doing, and I’ll answer any last-minute questions. This helps everyone relax before we start.

Step 2: Finding the Light

I’ll take a quick walk through your home to find the rooms with the best light—often the living room, main bedroom, or nursery. If an older sibling is there, I’ll ask them to give me the tour themselves. Having an active role can really help set the tone, especially with younger children.

Step 3: Session Flow

After everyone is ready to go, I’ll go over my tentative plan for our shoot, and we’ll get started. I typically start with family and sibling shots while everyone is fresh. Then we move into individual images of your baby and one-on-one moments with parents. Throughout, we follow your baby’s cues and adapt to their needs.

Step 4: Keeping It Comfortable

Lifestyle newborn sessions are baby-led. There’s no forced posing. Instead, I gently guide you into natural positions that feel good and capture the love you share. I’ll be keeping a gauge on the moods and energy levels, and I will let you know when I think we’ve gotten a good gallery. I will check in one last time to be sure we captured everything you hoped for, and then we will say our goodbyes!

After Your Newborn Session: What Happens Next?

You can expect to see your images about two to three weeks after our session. I’ll get in touch and let you know your gallery is ready and share a link to your private online gallery. The gallery also includes an online store to help you get your favorite images off your phones and hard-drives and into your hands. There are options for prints, framed prints, as well as custom made-for-you photo albums, which can be a lovely gift for you or your loved ones.

If you haven’t booked a session yet, be sure to get in touch! I have limited availability each month for newborn sessions. If you’re already booked in, know I can’t wait to hear the good news!

Meg is truly a gift behind the camera. She captured both my maternity and newborn photos. She captures the love and little in-between moments so effortlessly. Looking through the photos, I see not just what we looked like in those special days, but exactly how we felt. If you’re looking for someone who is not only incredibly talented but also deeply kind and grounded, Meg is the one.
