Preparing Your Home for Newborn Photos: A Simple, Stress-Free Guide

Newborn baby on mother’s lap as family cuddles on bed during in-home newborn session

Welcoming a new baby home is an unforgettable time. As a newborn photographer and a mom myself, I understand the chaos that fills those early days. Many new parents worry that their home isn’t “photo-ready.” But here’s the truth: there’s no better place than your own home to capture your family’s story. Every home has layers and history, and most importantly meaning to you. That’s why it is the perfect place to take photos with your new baby.

Just a few small preparations can go a long way. You don’t need to redecorate or aim for perfection—these tips will help create a cozy, personal space that brings out your family’s unique charm. This guide will show you how to prepare for your newborn photoshoot at home without the stress.

First, Take a Deep Breath!

Before you start rushing around and working yourself up, let’s talk.

Whether you’re in a cozy apartment or a larger home, we’ll focus on creating a welcoming feel in just a few key areas. Before your session, we’ll discuss what’s important to you and identify the best spots to capture these moments.

Keep It Simple—Declutter Without Deep-Cleaning

Focus on minimizing clutter in just a few areas rather than doing a deep clean. We’ll likely use rooms like the nursery, the living room, or your bedroom—these areas offer a variety of backdrops for capturing moments between you and your little one.

Here are some easy ways to keep things looking tidy without too much effort:

  • Clear surfaces: Remove everyday clutter from tables and shelves. Keep any framed photos or meaningful decor, but tuck away receipts, snacks, and other daily essentials in a drawer.
  • Hide practical items: Stash away things like the diaper caddy or baby monitor, allowing the focus to remain on you and your baby.
  • Choose simple bedding: Neutral, solid-colored comforters or sheets (in whites or creams) create a calm, timeless look on beds and in cribs. If your bedding is patterned, flipping it to the plain side can work wonders.

And please don’t worry about things like dishes in the sink or mopping floors; none of that will be in the frame, and I won’t notice!

We’ll Make the Most of Your Light and Space

Natural light is a beautiful, soft backdrop for newborn photos, so we’ll work with the areas of your home that have the best lighting. In most homes, this will be rooms with large windows or areas where natural light flows in gently during the late morning.

During the session, we can think creatively and:

  • Move the crib closer to a window to take advantage of the natural light, even if it’s usually placed in a darker corner.
  • Swivel a glider or chair around to create a clutter-free background.
  • Bring the crib mattress into a well-lit area like the living room to create the feel of an in-crib shot without the limitations of space.
  • Try out-of-the-box locations like the hallway, a stairwell, or even the kitchen for a change of scenery with beautiful light.

Even if your space isn’t flooded with light, a little creativity can help us to create some beautiful images.

So, What Else Can You Do to Prepare?

A few final touches can make your home feel warm and ready for in-home newborn photography without any extra stress.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

Warm up the room to keep baby comfortable. This way, blankets can add cozy charm rather than just warmth.

Keep Essentials Close By

  • Have basics handy: pacifiers, wipes, and an extra outfit to keep things running smoothly.
  • Add personal touches: Set aside a few meaningful items—like a favorite blanket, a family heirloom, or a small toy—that add a personal story to your photos.

Remember: It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

I believe that “perfect” doesn’t exist—especially when it comes to family homes! Your space should look lived in and loved, just like it does every day. Don’t worry about hiding every sign of family life; a toy on the floor, crumpled sheets, or a book left out on the side table all tell the story of this beautiful, busy chapter.

If there’s a bit too much clutter, I’ll help move things around or shoot from angles that highlight the beauty and minimize distractions. Your home, just as it is, makes the photos personal and meaningful.

On the day of the session, we’ll take our time, have fun, and go with the flow—letting your baby lead. There’s no rush and no pressure; just a relaxed, cozy time together to celebrate your new arrival. Future You will be so grateful for these reminders of this fleeting, special time.
