It’s true that motherhood is hard, but it’s also a whole lot easier when you have the right tools and people in your corner. I’m an english-speaking Newborn Photographer and mom of two, living in Munich. Moving back and forth between Germany and the U.S. brought its own challenges, especially when it came to pregnancy and newborn care. From figuring out where to buy baby clothes to discovering how pregnancy and birth work in Germany, has been a journey. Through trial, error, and a lot of conversations with other moms, I found what works. We all seem to agree on a few must-haves that make this season smoother for both mom and baby.
To help ease your transition into motherhood, I’ve compiled a list of the top actual essentials for the newborn phase. These recommendations are tried and true—straightforward, simple, and solid advice from moms who’ve been there. Whether you’re putting together a registry or gearing up for the big day, these items are here to make life a little easier and your baby a lot cozier.
Sleep is something I feel really strongly about, and it seems to be shockingly controversial.
Listen, you don’t have to suffer through sleep deprivation just because you’re a new parent. Yes, your sleep in those early weeks is going to be limited to a couple of hours here and there, but with a bit of help you can be sleeping through the night again. Newborns don’t come knowing how to sleep—they need your help to learn. By watching their wake windows, keeping them well-fed during the day, and creating a cozy sleep environment, you can encourage longer stretches of sleep at night (and catch some Zs yourself!). So I’m starting off my list of essentials with items that will help your baby sleep and in turn you!

A white noise machine is a game-changer. Babies are used to the constant sound of blood rushing and your heartbeat in the womb. A sound machine not only mimics that soothing noise but also helps drown out household sounds.
My Recommendation: MarPac Rohm (perfect for on-the-go) or a Hatch Rest (if you can get one from the US)

Let me stress this: swaddling is key to helping your newborn sleep better. In Germany, I’ve noticed many parents skip swaddling, but it’s a lifesaver for calming babies. During the “fourth trimester,” babies need to transition from the snug, cozy womb to the big, wide world. Swaddling helps by replicating that sense of security while keeping their flailing arms from waking them with the startle reflex.
Yes, they probably will fuss as you wrap them. Trust me, I know how hard this can be as a first-time mom, but I promise that they will settle quickly and sleep longer stretches afterward.
My Recommendation: Sleepea Swaddle or Ollie Swaddle

During those early days, wraps or soft carriers like the Ergobaby Embrace are ideal for contact naps. They allow you to move around while the baby naps securely on you. For later stages, I recommend transitioning to something structured like the Ergobaby 360. In those early days, wraps or carriers like the Ergobaby Embrace are lifesavers for contact naps. Not only does this help your baby learn to nap, but it also gives you a chance to move around while keeping them close. As your baby grows, transitioning to something like the Ergobaby 360 is ideal for naps on the go. Babywearing keeps your hands free while providing your baby with the comfort of being close.
Recommendation: Ergobaby Aura Baby Wrap, Embrace and Omni 360
While blackout curtains aren’t on my list because of the rollladen (shutters) most homes in Munich have, I would highly recommend them if you live somewhere without this feature. A dark space is key for good sleep!
If you’re reading this in the middle of the newborn period and you find yourself needing more support with sleep, I would recommend reaching out to Lauren. She offers workshops and 1:1 support in Munich.
Feeding your newborn is about comfort, convenience, and preparedness. Here’s what you’ll need to make this experience as smooth as possible:
A soft, adjustable nightlight is a game-changer for nighttime feedings. It provides just enough light to nurse or bottle-feed without overstimulating your baby or disturbing their sleep. Look for options with a warm, gentle glow to maintain a calm atmosphere.

A supportive breastfeeding pillow can save your arms and back during those countless feeding sessions. It positions your baby comfortably, ensuring better latching and reducing strain on your body.
My Recommendation: My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow or Boppy
Soft, absorbent, and gentle on the skin, muslin burp cloths are indispensable for catching spit-ups and wiping small messes. Stock up—you’ll use them more often than you think!
Hot Tip: If your baby frequently spits up, consider muslin or bandana bibs to minimize outfit changes. Newborns notoriously dislike being dressed!
So what do you need? And what is it called? Baby clothing terminology can vary: In Germany, they’re “Bodys,” while British English calls them “Babygrows,” and Americans use “Onesies” or “Footed Sleepers.”

4-8 minimum, and more if you don’t want to do laundry every other day. Be sure to have on hand two sizes: NB (gr. 50/56) and 1-3 month (gr. 62/68), as you won’t know before baby is born which size you’ll need and they grow quickly!
When it comes to dressing your baby, convenience is key. Zippered onesies are a lifesaver for new parents, as they eliminate the hassle of dealing with buttons and snaps. These onesies make diaper changes quick and easy, especially during nighttime feedings.
Ideal for newborns, these styles avoid pressure on the umbilical cord and are easier than pulling over the head.
Look for onesies made from soft, breathable fabrics to keep your baby comfortable and cozy.

Newborns don’t need much in the way of toys, but having a secure, cozy place to relax makes all the difference—for them and for you. Here are two essentials I relied on with my daughters:
This lightweight, portable seat was my go-to for keeping my babies safe and happy. Its gentle bouncing motion can soothe a fussy baby, and the ergonomic design supports healthy development. The bouncy seat is easy to move from room to room, making it ideal whether you need to shower, cook, or simply enjoy a moment of calm. For my sister-in-law, this seat gave them the luxury of eating dinner with both hands again.
Recommendation: BabyBjörn Bouncy Seat
The Dock-a-Tot or Snuggle Me is a cozy, snug option that mimics the feeling of being held. During the “fourth trimester,” babies transition from the safety of the womb to the big world outside, and they often crave that same secure, close sensation. While these loungers provide a comforting space for supervised relaxation, it’s important to note they are not recommended for sleep. Always keep your baby within sight while using them.
These items don’t just keep your baby comfortable—they’ll also give you precious moments to tackle your to-dos or simply recharge.
Recommendation: Dock-a-Tot
Trimming tiny nails doesn’t have to be nerve-wracking. An electric nail file is a gentle, quiet tool that prevents accidental cuts while keeping your baby’s nails smooth. It’s one of those things that you won’t know how you lived without it before.
Recommendation: Electric Nail File
This is on that is a must-have for me, but maybe not for others. I’ve met many moms who don’t use one – but I think it isn’t because they didn’t have a GOOD one to see what a difference it makes. Even newborn diapers can get smelly, not just once they are eating solids. A real diaper pail locks in odors and keeps your home from stinking.
Recommendation: Ubbi
Muslin blankets are a versatile and essential item for any new parent. These blankets can be used for swaddling, as a nursing cover, or even as a play mat. They are lightweight, breathable, and gentle on your baby’s skin. Muslin blankets are also perfect for wrapping your baby during baths, keeping them calm and warm.
Recommendation: Aden + Anais
These items might not make the top list but can bring comfort and ease to your early parenting days.
The newborn phase can feel overwhelming. Your maternal instinct doesn’t just kick-in with all this knowledge immediately upon birth. For me, the fourth trimester was a big learning curve for both me and my baby. And navigating this as an expat adds an extra layer of complexity.
Remember, it’s not about having every gadget under the sun. It’s about choosing items that genuinely make your life easier and help you focus on what matters most: bonding with your baby and recovering yourself. Building a strong support system is crucial during this time. Consider joining a baby class or signing up for a free community with Pippagina. Pippagina is a great resource for English-speaking parents in Munich. And trust me, a sense of community that can make all the difference in your postpartum journey!
